Powerful cold-season winds caused walls to collapse onto fragile shelters housing Palestinians displaced by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than four individuals. These deaths underscores the perilous situation that persist after over 24 months of intense airstrikes and critical lack of aid.

Truce Offers Little Relief from Severe Weather

Although a ceasefire has been in effect since October, humanitarian organizations report that residents broadly lack the sufficient shelter required to survive frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the bodies, reported on Tuesday that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has allowed us to witness death in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda following the burial. "It’s true the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, 3 people of a single household — elderly Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an eight-metre high wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. No fewer than 5 others were injured in the event.

Family members on that day started clearing the debris that had buried their loved ones and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Emergency

The UN and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as food and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of Palestinians reside in improvised tents since their homes were turned into rubble over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say an insufficient amount of building supplies are reaching Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Numbers After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, says more than four hundred and forty people have been fatally shot by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals after the ceasefire went into effect. A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that no fewer than 100 minors below eighteen years old – sixty males and 40 females – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began due to military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, artillery fire and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, reflected incidents where enough details had been compiled to warrant documentation, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He added that many hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'bombings and gunfire have decreased' under the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told reporters at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the international community now calls calm would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he concluded.

Another Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million individuals has been fighting to keep the freezing temperatures and storms at bay while enduring shortages of assistance and a absence of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently needed throughout the colder season.
