The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.

It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.

“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”

The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.

The animal, provided by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.

A New Life

Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.

“It represents the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”

Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
