The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

ā€œIt feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,ā€ said Cappa. ā€œThe attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.ā€

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
