The Academy Awards will commence broadcasting solely on the global video platform in the year 2029, signaling the most recent substantial change in the film industry.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement on Wednesday, indicating that it entered into a long-term agreement awarding YouTube the exclusive global rights to the Oscars until 2033.

The awards show, which is planned for 15 March, has been televised for a half a century on the traditional network. Starting in 2029, the ceremony will be viewable in real-time without charge on the digital platform.

This is another major shakeup in Hollywood, which is grappling with company buyouts and fusions, coupled with steep slashes to movie budgets.

"The Academy is an global institution, and this collaboration will allow us to broaden reach to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience imaginable - which will be beneficial for our membership and the movie industry," stated organization heads in a announcement.

Throughout a long period, ratings of the awards show have dropped, even if there was a minor increase in 2025, with a notable portion of younger viewers watching from cell phones and desktops.

In a related comment, the head of YouTube described the Oscars "a key fundamental cultural touchstones" and added that teaming up with the Academy would "inspire a younger cohort of creativity and film lovers while adhering to the Oscars' celebrated heritage".

The broadcast network, which has televised the ceremony since 1976, said that it was eagerly anticipating "to the next three telecasts" it will still host.

The move coincides with major studios deal with complex corporate battles. These potential deals were seen as problematic for an sector that has seen drastic cuts over the recent period.

Similar to major studios, cable networks have struggled as the viewers has shifted towards on-demand video as an alternative.

The platform securing rights to the Oscars further suggests that reliance on digital platforms will persist increasing.
