Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people perished and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
