Keeper Mary Earps has publicly stated that her freshly launched personal story was not designed to “damage others” and shared worry that public reaction has been “misinterpreted.”

Disputed Remarks and Supporters’ Disapproval

The retired international goalkeeper, who played a key role in the tournament success, encountered disapproval from followers and Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about ex-colleague Hannah Hampton and manager Sarina Wiegman.

In her memoir, Earps reportedly claimed told Wiegman she was “supporting poor attitude” by bringing Hampton back to the national team after omitting her for being “disruptive and unreliable.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps shared in an interview.

Clarifying Her Purpose

Earps firmly declared that the autobiography was never intended to damage anyone.

• “That doesn’t reflect my character as a individual.”
• “This reflects reality. It has consequences. It isn’t a drama.”

She also remarked about how the women’s game has evolved into a realm that has become “almost like performance,” where personal lives are analyzed in detail for audience entertainment.

Earps mentioned losing the starting position as the first-choice keeper ahead of the tournament and how that affected their dynamic with Wiegman.

She explained it was “not an abrupt downfall” in their dynamic—just a difference of perspectives—and she continues to admire the manager.

“There were things that occurred during that period that I would have preferred to go another way,” Earps stated.

Individual Difficulties

In the autobiography, Earps opened up about the bullying she suffered at school, describing it as a “particularly challenging” section to go back to because it reawakened past pain.

These sentiments led to panic attacks, and Earps disclosed she had issues with physical appearance and resorted to drinking during the global health crisis to handle emotional difficulties.

Earps openly discussed that she is in a relationship with a woman and expressed pride about her connection with Kitty.

She also talked about her desire to be a mother and revealed she has preserved her eggs for future use.

“I would love to be a parent and have a family,” Earps said. “I love playing football, but I aspire to have a child at a later stage.”

Earps described the fertility process as “intense and intrusive” and called for more investigation tailored to athletes undergoing equivalent processes.

Throughout the interview, Earps maintained that she has no second thoughts about her sports path or individual actions, highlighting that she always acted with integrity.
