Detonations and Low-Altitude Jets Reported in Venezuela's Capital Caracas

Reports surfaced of several explosions and the roar of low-flying aircraft in the Venezuelan capital in the early hours of the weekend. The situation has sparked claims from the Venezuelan authorities and requests for global action.

Venezuela Condemns Washington of Aggression

Venezuela's authoritarian administration has blamed the Washington of committing "imperial aggression," claiming that former President Donald Trump reportedly authorized military strikes against the Latin American state. In an official statement, the government confirmed that attacks had targeted Caracas and three other states: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua state.

"Our only objective of this attack is to take control of Venezuela's natural resources, in particular its crude oil and mineral wealth," the government said.

Venezuelan officials appealed to the global community to denounce the actions, which it described a "flagrant violation of global law" that put millions of civilians in danger.

Reports of Blasts and Military Installations Targeted

Eyewitnesses reported hearing roughly multiple detonations around the middle of the night local time. People in different districts reportedly hurried into the open.

"The whole ground shook. It was terrifying. We experienced blasts and aircraft in the area," stated one local.

Black smoke was observed billowing from key defense sites in the city: the La Carlota airbase air base and the Fuerte Tiuna army base, where president Nicolás Maduro is believed to reside.

Global Response

The president of bordering Colombia, claimed on a social platform that "At this moment they are bombing Caracas... bombing it with rockets." He called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

The Colombian government, which recently joined the UNSC, stated it would initiate security protocols at its frontier with Venezuela.

Background

These reported attacks are preceded by a prolonged pressure campaign by the US against the Maduro regime. Beginning in August, authorities reported a major naval buildup off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a series of strikes on boats accused of narco-trafficking.

Venezuela's administration has stated "a state of external disturbance" and ordered all defense plans to be initiated. It has also called on its political forces to mobilize and "reject this imperialist act."

US authorities and the US Department of Defense have not immediately commented on inquiries for comment regarding the events.
