The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

Historical Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent cases involve:

• Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
• Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

This event follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team traded key defensive player Parsons to the Packers.
