Congress Greenlights Bill to Release Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday passed without delay to a measure that will mandate the disclosure of investigative files associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a change of position by the president and his Republican allies. The administration relented after an extended period of trying to delay the joint action involving a scandal that has followed the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

The public have waited long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”

Presidential Signature

The bill next heads to Donald Trump for his signature. He signaled on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though the president has for an extended period downplayed the outcry over the official management of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the past few days, and said he would sign the measure if it is presented to him.

Response

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their advocates who were seated in a public section, cheered after the bill was passed. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who stated he feared the measure would make public specific data of witnesses, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
