Condemnation Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Rebuke

Personalities from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his remarks following the tragic passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Post

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.

This is a appalling and despicable comment,ā€ said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. She referenced prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Party

A number of Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his political party to justify the comments.

Reiner's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."

Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of a different political figure.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
