I assumed to book a place to stay upon arrival, yet once I got there, a large conference was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out. As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the airport – but soon learned that airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. With no idea how to proceed and growing worried, I hopped on a city-bound bus and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, believing I could pass the evening in an establishment that stayed open all night. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape to succeed at an interview the next day, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach. The world needs more individuals like that woman. It seems I seemed out of place since a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city center and inquired if I was OK. I recounted my situation and right away she suggested I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: one filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I had access to a hot shower and a protected spot and secure to spend the night. With hindsight, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took as a young woman allowing a male stranger she had only just encountered crash at her place. Back then I operated under a bubble of male privilege and did not consider about things like that. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative. I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I never saw her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that the universe has returned her good deed tenfold. We could all use more people who show such kindness.
